Econometrics (MSc)

The Master of Science in Econometrics is a multidisciplinary one-year programme that provides a balanced and rigorous training in quantitative analysis of problems in economics and finance. The programme consists of advanced courses in both mathematical economics and econometrics.

Mathematical economics deals with mathematical modelling of such market phenomena as price adjustment processes. Econometrics deals with statistical modelling, estimation and testing of economic models using economic and financial time series data.

Upon completion of the Master's programme, students will have obtained a sufficient level of academic vigour to read major academic journals in Economics. They will also be able to apply advanced mathematical and statistical methods, supported by modern software packages such as E-Views and OX, to the exploration and analysis of problems in economics and finance

Studying Econometrics at the University of Amsterdam

The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) specialises in providing students with the broad range of skills, in-depth knowledge and international expertise that they will need in the business world and public sector alike. Many of the lecturers in the Master of Econometrics are researchers at the Amsterdam School of Economics (ASE), one of the ten research programmes of which is dedicated to Econometrics. Approximately 30 students currently participate in the ASE's English-taught international PhD programme. A number of internal and external economics-related research institutes are affiliated with the ASE, enriching research and career opportunities for students in the Master's programme.

Econometrics as a part-time programme

The MSc in Econometrics is not available as a part-time programme.

Accreditation and degree

The quality of this master's programme has been positively assessed (accredited) by the Accreditation Organisation of The Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). This means that upon successful completion of the programme students will receive a legally recognised Master's degree in Econometrics and the title Master of Science (MSc). You can find more information on accreditation and degrees through the links below.

Actuarial Sciences (MSc)

The Master of Science in Actuarial Sciences is a one-year programme for those wishing to work as an actuary (an insurance mathematician). An actuary designs and monitors financial security systems. The actuarial profession is currently in a period of transition and has come to encompass management of financial risks outside the insurance sector. The Master's programme in Actuarial Sciences is a multidisciplinary programme providing a balanced and rigorous training in the financial and mathematical analysis of complex insurance issues. It focuses on mathematical model-building in the various specialised fields of insurance: life insurance, non-life insurance and pension funds. Because the programme is aimed at helping students develop a scientific attitude and approach, it places a great deal of emphasis on the theoretical foundations of various methods and techniques.

Studying Actuarial Sciences at the University of Amsterdam

What makes the University of Amsterdam's Master's programme in Actuarial Sciences unique is its range of courses incorporating all the latest international developments, such as Fair Value Techniques, Market-Consistent Embedded Value and Solvency II. The programme is taught by leading scholars in the field of actuarial sciences, together with a number of professionals who work in the industry itself; this ensures that students learn the most up-to-date techniques, practices and insights. The UvA Master in Actuarial Sciences is the only stand-alone Master's degree of its kind offered in the Netherlands.

Actuarial Sciences as a part-time programme

It is not possible to complete the MSc in Actuarial Sciences as a part-time programme.

What our students say

Lambert Naudin ten Cate: "The content of the master's courses is very relevant to working in practice and this solid foundation allows for a smooth transition into the workplace."

Accreditation and degree

The Master's programme in Actuarial Sciences has been accredited by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). This means that upon successful completion of the programme, students will receive a legally accredited Master's degree in Actuarial Sciences and the title of Master of Science (MSc).

Operations Research and Management (MSc)

What is Operations Research Management?

There is no generally accepted single definition for Operations Research Management (ORM), or as it is also referred to, Management Science.
In short however, it can be described as:

The field of applied analytical methods for decision making in logistical business environments.

Students involved in ORM, develop and use mathematical and computational methods, which help to evaluate, improve or resolve operational and logistical issues in business or industrial situations.

ORM deals with questions such as:

  • How can we model a complex production line or a hospital department so as to evaluate its performance and compute the effect of possible changes?
  • Should service capacities be pooled, such as check-in counters at airports, call centre agents in contact centres or MRI-scans in hospitals?
  • How much blood must be donated and produced at blood banks in order to minimise shortages, wastage and costs?
  • How can we establish minimal cost routing and distribution schemes?
  • How much, of which, product mix should a firm produce?

Students become familiar with practical questions and possible approaches through both theoretical and practical (two case) courses. They also have the opportunity to undertake an internship as part of the Master thesis.

Why study Operations Research Management at the University of Amsterdam?

The programme offers:

  • a well balanced curriculum with advanced Deterministic and Stochastic Operations Research courses as well an Applied Operations Research-stream.
  • opportunities for additional elective courses or a practical internship.
  • practical experiences and contacts leading to specialized case courses and possibilities for thesis topics.
  • teaching staff with established scientific records and reputations in deterministic (TSP, heuristics, scheduling, inventory theory) and stochastic (queuing, queuing-networks, Markov decision theory) ORM.
  • excellent career prospects for Graduates of Operations Research Management.

Accreditation and degree

The Master's programme in Operations Research Management has been legally accredited by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). This means that upon successful completion of the programme, students will receive a Master's degree in Operations Research Management and the title of Master of Science (MSc).
